РУС: Мартин Маржела — человек-загадка, бельгийский дизайнер, имя которого никогда не ассоциировалось с его лицом, лишь с его коллекциями. Бывший ассистент Жан-Поля Готье создал особенный стиль, отражавший дух 90-х, став одним из наиболее значимых дизайнеров деконструктивизма вслед за вдохновлявшими его Ёдзи Ямамото и Рэй Кавакубо.
Документальный формат фильма «Мартин Маржела: Своими словами» позволил его создателям строить действие в традиционно-хронологическом порядке. Опорными точками послужили коллекции Maison Martin Margiela и «отвлекаясь» на историю Маржелы-человека, мы знакомимся с тем, каким дизайнер ощущает себя сам. Запуская Maison Martin Margiela, он выбрал не появляться перед объективами и не общаться с прессой. И несмотря на то, что мы видим только руки, мы знакомимся с ним, или скорее с его восприятием себя, чуть более лично.
В этом фильме Мартин рассказывает о детстве, он хорошо помнит, как увидев показ Андре Куррежа по телевизору, он спросил маму, что это такое. «Какой-то модный дизайнер из Парижа», — ответила она. Атмосфера «рефлексирующих» 90-х, расцвета арт-хаусного кино и гранжа, элегантно подчеркнута идеально-белым оформлением пространства в мастерских и шоу-румах Margiela, а сам дизайнер ощущается не столько бунтарем, сколько педантом, превратившим протест в новые правила.
Фильм, увиденный нами на предпремьерном показе на Открытой киностудии «Лендок», получился таким, каким его хотел видеть сам Мартин Маржела: в нем не было критики или сомнений в статусе дизайнера, его положении на модном Олимпе. Здесь он сам объясняет свою «анонимность» нежеланием объяснять смысл каждой коллекции и попыткой оградить себя от груза известности, которая по его опасениям, не позволила бы сделать так много в качестве дизайнера, художника и творца. После расставания с миром моды он сосредоточен на творчестве, осенью 2021 запланировано открытие выставки его арт-работ в Lafayette Anticipations в Париже. На финальный вопрос «Сделал ли ты все, что хотел?», его ответом было «Нет». Что ж, нам остается только ожидать следующих шагов Мартина Маржела в моде или искусстве.

ENG: Martin Margiela is a mystery man, a Belgian designer whose name has never been associated with his face, only with his collections. A former assistant to Jean-Paul Gaultier created a distinctive style that reflected the spirit of the 90s, becoming one of the most important designers of deconstructivism, following the inspirations of Yohji Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo.
The documentary style of the film "Martin Margiela In His Own Words" allowed its creators to build the action in a traditional for the genre chronological order. The reference points were the collections of Maison Martin Margiela and “distracted” by the story of Margiela the human, we get to know how the designer feels himself. Launching Maison Martin Margiela, he chose not to appear in front of the cameras and not communicate with the press traditional way. And despite the fact that we only see his hands, we get to know him, or rather with his perception of himself, a little more personally.
In this film, Martin talks about his childhood, he remembers well how, when he saw André Courreges' show on TV, he asked his mother what it was. “A fashion designer from Paris,” she replied. Since then, the boy realized that he wanted to become a “fashion designer in Paris”. He shows the archives carefully preserved by his mother: dolls, clothes and wigs for them, drawings and notes.
In addition to Margiela himself, introducing his memories, which are stored in carefully signed boxes, Pierre Rougier, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Olivier Sayard, Carine Roitfeld, Kristina De Coninck and other iconic figures of the fashion world of the “era of Margiela” tell the audience about the genius of the designer and work with him.

The atmosphere of the "reflective" 90s, the epoch of cinema d’auteur and grunge style, is elegantly emphasized by the ideal-white design of the space in the workshops and showrooms of Margiela, and the designer himself is felt not so much a rebel as a pedant who turned protest into new rules.

The film we have seen on “Lendoc” studio turned out the way Martin Margiela himself wanted to see it: there was no criticism or doubts about the status of the designer, his position on the fashion Olympus. Here he explains his "anonymity" by his unwillingness to explain the meaning of each collection and an attempt to shield himself from the burden of fame, which, according to his fears, would not allow him doing so much as a designer, artist and creator. After leaving the fashion world, he focuses on creativity, with an exhibition of his artwork scheduled to open the fall 2021 at Lafayette Anticipations in Paris. To the final question, "Have you done everything you wanted?", His answer was "No." Well, we can only wait for Martin Margiela's next steps in fashion or art.
