Anastasia Sviridova, our special correspondent at the Cannes Film Festival 2022, writes about the new film by Lukas Dhont.
ENG: “I dedicate this film to all the friends I have lost,” with these words, Lukas Dhont, the director of Close (2022), ended his triumphant screening at Cannes Film Festival 2022 and received a long standing ovation.
The film shows the close friendship of two thirteen-year-old boys, Leo (Eden Dambrine) and Remy (Gustav de Waele), which begins to break down due to the puberty. When tragedy strikes, one of them has to ponder why he distanced himself from his closest friend. And the main part of the film is about the journey of exploring himself in forgiveness and vulnerability.
We can see young Eden Dambrine (by the way, this is his first Cannes and, of course, the audience watched a flurry of genuine emotions), a stunningly gifted boy, hopefully with a great future. The strength and sincerity of his feelings fills into the depths of the soul, you believe him in every moment. The first suffering of youth, the first loss. Gustav de Waele, who is the opposite of Eden, both in his appearance and in energy, also looks bright in the film.
I watched this poignant film sometimes holding my breath. The sensuality of the image, the colors, the sincerity, the necessary drama of this seemingly simple story led to the fascinating corridors of the art of cinema. I didn't cry, but at the end of the show, when the applause began, there were tears in my eyes, just because of the purity of the moment. This delight, the peak of experiences that... This love that fills everyone on both sides of the screen. This is the power of cinema. This is something elusive, thanks to which I return to festivals every time and understand that I cannot live without it.
The film has not only touched the hearts of the public, but also got the Grand Prix of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival.

RUS: «Я посвящаю этот фильм всем друзьям, которых потерял», - этими словами Лукас Дон, режиссёр фильма «Близко» (Close, 2022), завершил свой триумфальный показ в Каннах и получил долгие стоячие овации.
В фильме показана близкая дружба двух тринадцатилетних мальчиков, Лео (Иден Дамбрин) и Реми (Густав де Вэле), которая начинает разрушаться из-за переходного возраста главных героев. Когда случается трагедия, одному из них приходится задуматься о том, почему он отдалился от своего самого близкого друга. И большая часть картины посвящена пути исследования себя в прощении и уязвимости.
В главной роли — юный Иден Дамбрин (кстати, это — его первые Канны и, конечно же, зрители наблюдали шквал неподдельных эмоций), потрясающе одаренный мальчик, вероятно с большим будущим. Сила и искренность его чувств пробивает до глубины души, ему веришь в каждом кадре. Первые страдания юности, первая утрата. Ярко выглядит в кадре и Густав де Вэле, противоположный Идену как внешне, так и по образу.
Я смотрела этот пронзительный фильм с замиранием сердца, иногда задерживая дыхание. Чувственность кадров, цвета, душевность, необходимая драматичность этой простой, казалось бы, истории уводили за собой в увлекательные коридоры искусства кино. Я не плакала, но в конце показа, когда начались аплодисменты, в моих глазах стояли слезы от чистоты момента. Этот восторг, пик переживаний, которые окупились сполна. Эта любовь, наполняющая всех по обе стороны экрана. Это сила кино. Это — нечто неуловимое, благодаря которому я каждый раз возвращаюсь на фестивали и понимаю, что не могу жить без них.
Стоит отметить, что фильм не только тронул сердца публики, но и получил Гран-При жюри Каннского фестиваля.
